Chapter Twenty-Five

A bell chimed when Dan walked into Maddy’s on Main. A familiar voice hollered from the back. “Be right with you.”

He wandered through the store while he was waiting. He picked up an embroidered pillow he thought Scout might like on his bed but changed his mind when he read the price tag.

“Hey, cowboy. What are you doing here?” Her surprise changed to alarm. “Has something happened to my sister?”

He replaced the pillow. “Don’t worry. Lea is fine. I’m here on a personal matter.”

She relaxed. “Looking for items to spruce up the house you rented? I’ll give you my family’s discount on anything in the store.”

“Maybe another time.” He followed her to the seating area for shoppers. “I hear you go the extra mile for a person in need. Is that true?”

“You bet. Are you that person?”

“I need someone I trust for a mission I can’t undertake myself.”

“What about your partner? Isn’t that what Lea is trained to do?”

“She’s busy with our current case. Besides, I don’t want her or Warren to know.”

Maddy rubbed her hands together. “Sounds intriguing. I’m all ears.”

“I need to get hold of a helicopter pilot I served with in the army. His name is Bob Haroldson.”

“Wait a minute. Wasn’t he the person formerly suspected of trying to kill you?”

Chills ran up his spine as he recalled the case when he was the target of a gunman. “One and the same, until we discovered the guilty party was Stacy’s ex-husband.”

“Sounds as though Haroldson is still causing problems.”

“That’s why I need to find him. I received a tip that he works for a security company in Woodland Hills. The firm employs ex-military and ex-law men. I could be recognized if I make inquiries myself.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Visit the company on the pretext of hiring them.” He gave her a picture. “This is me and my former squad on one of our missions. Haroldson is the tall guy on the left. Let me know if you see him.”

“What reason should I give for wanting to hire them?”

“Among other things, they do residential work for gated communities. Tell them you’re a property manager interested in hiring security for the projects you manage.”

Maddy glowed with excitement. “I can carry on a believable conversation in that regard. Mom and Dad live in a condominium development. Paul works in commercial real estate. I’ve heard enough at family dinners to supply plenty to talk about.”

“My thoughts exactly. The head of the company, Mike Edwards, will give you a spiel on their services. When he describes personnel, ask about Haroldson. Tell him a friend recommended the guy.”

“Is that all I have to do? Sounds easy.”

“Don’t treat this lightly, Maddy,” he warned. “These men are dangerous. Stay on your toes. Give no more information than is necessary. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, end the conversation and get out of there. I’ll find another way. The last thing I want is to put you in harm’s way.”

“Stop worrying so much. You sound like my sister when we used to work together.
